Ordering the Right-Sized Frame
Should I enter the exact dimensions of my canvas/artwork?
Yes, provide the exact canvas size. We build each frame with an additional length and width allowance so that it properly fits your artwork. Just tell us your canvas or panel dimensions, and we take care of the rest.
For traditional frames we add 3/16 inch to both width and length. For floater frames, we add 1/2 inch to the width and length in order to create a 1/4” “float” around all 4 sides of the artwork.
I have a standard-size pre-made canvas and stretcher. Can I just order from your standard sizes?
Yes, in most cases, you can order directly from our standard sizes. However, we recommend double-checking your canvas with a tape measure. We’ve noticed that some pre-made canvases can vary by as much as ±1/4" from their advertised dimensions. If your canvas measures true to size, simply select the matching option from our dropdown list of standard sizes when ordering.
Do I need to add anything to my dimensions so the frame will fit?
No, please enter the exact dimensions of your artwork. For traditional frames, we automatically add 1/8" total to each dimension to ensure a proper fit. For floater frames, we add 1/4" float to all four sides, which increases each dimension by 1/2" total.
I need a 1/4" float around all four sides. What size should I enter?
We automatically add 1/4" to each of the four sides, which increases the overall dimensions by 1/2" to both the width and height you provide. Simply enter the exact size of your artwork, and we’ll adjust it to include the 1/4" float on all sides for the perfect fit.
I only want a 1/8" float on all sides. What size should I order?
This is non-standard. We automatically add 1/4" to each side (a total of 1/2" to both the width and height you enter). Since you want a 1/8" float on all sides (which adds 1/4" total to each measurement), please subtract 1/4" from both the width and height of your actual artwork dimensions when entering your order.
I want a 3/8" float on all sides. What size should I order?
We automatically add 1/4" to each side (a total of 1/2" to both the width and height you enter). Since you want a 3/8" float on all sides (which adds 3/4" total to each measurement), please add 1/4" to both the width and height of your actual artwork dimensions when entering your order to achieve the desired 3/8" float.
How much space is there between the edge of the canvas and the float?
For floater frames, we build in a ¼ inch “float” around the entire canvas
I have a 2" canvas, do you have a floater frame that will work.
Yes, check out our "Rhett" frame.
What is a "spacer," and do I need one?
A "spacer" is a insert used in floater frames, placed between your artwork (such as a canvas or panel) and the frame’s tray to adjust the depth and ensure proper positioning. In a floater frame, the artwork appears to "float" within the frame, and for a professional look, the art recess—the distance from the frame’s face to the artwork surface—should ideally be between 0" (flush with the frame face) and -3/8" (slightly recessed below the frame face). At Articient, we make this process simple. When ordering a floater frame, just measure the depth of your canvas or panel and select the appropriate size under the 'Spacers' option on the frame product page. We’ll provide the correct spacer to achieve the desired recess. If you select this option and a spacer isn’t needed (e.g., your artwork depth already fits perfectly), you won’t be charged for one. Please note that spacers are only applicable to floater frames, not traditional frames."Articient spacers are custom made to work with the size of yoru artwork. They will be visable from the front once installed.
What if my custom frame size falls between 1/8 inch increments?
Round up to the nearest 1/8 inch.
Does it matter which dimension is width and which is length?
The short answer is "no", it generally does not matter. If you require installation, please indicate the orientation in your order notes if orientation is not obvious/self-evident.
If you are purchasing a hardwire kit, enough wire will be provided to accommodate the longest side.
How does canvas/panel thickness affect floater frame selection?
Match the thickness of your canvas/panel to the frame's interior depth ("rabbet").
You can see the interior depth of each frame by scrolling through the product images.
See an example below.
As long as your canvas is not taller than the rabbet, the frame can fit your artwork.
In the diagram below note that this frame has a rabbet depth of 1 9/16”.Canvases and panels up to 1 9/16” thick will work with this frame.
Canvases and panels that are less than 1 9/16” may require a “spacer” to be mounted properly.
We recommend the artwork face be within 0” to 3/8” of the frame face.

Can I get a small frame cut to a 5" width or length?
We do not cut frames this small. Our smallest legth or width cut is 6".
How do I order a spacer?
First, measure the depth of your canvas. Second, select “spacers” on the product page under “artwork dimensions” and enter the measured canvas depth.
See Image Below:

Installation
How do I select the right sized offset clip to use with a traditional frame?
To determine the size of offset clips needed when framing a canvas or panel, accounting for whether the canvas will be inset, flush, or outset from the back of the frame:
- Measure the Canvas or Panel Depth: Use a ruler to measure the thickness of the canvas (stretcher bar depth, typically 3/4", 1", 1 3/8", or 1-1/2" for standard canvases or 1/8", or 1/4" for standard panels..
- Measure Frame Rabbet Depth*: Measure the depth of the frame’s rabbet (the inner ledge where the canvas sits) from the back edge of the frame to the rabbet’s bottom.
*Rabbet Depths information located on image #3 and in the frame's description on our website.
3). Calculate Offset Clip Size: Calculate the size by subtracting one measurement from the other. It does not matter which.
Example A:
- Canvas depth = 3/4", rabbet depth = 1".
- Inset: 1" - 3/4" = 1/4" clip.
Example B:
- Canvas depth = 1 1/4", rabbet depth = 1".
- Inset: 1" - 1 1/4" = 1/4" clip.
I have a thinner 3/4" canvas, which floater frames should I order?
All of our floater frames are compatible with a 3/4" deep canvas. However, you’ll likely need to include an optional 'spacer' to ensure proper fit and presentation. When placing your order, simply select the depth of your canvas—3/4"—from the 'Spacer' option dropdown on the product page, and we’ll include the appropriate spacer for your frame."
I have a 1 1/2" deep canvas. Which frames will work for a 1 1/2" canvas?
Nearly all of our floater frames are compatible with a 1 1/2" deep canvas. If you choose the Rhett frame, you might want to consider adding a spacer to ensure the perfect fit and professional appearance. Aboid our Hanover frame as it is designed specifically for shallower canvases.
How do I attach my spacer to my artwork for installation in the frame?
The method for attaching the spacer depends on your artwork type:
For a Canvas Stretcher: You’ll need four screws to secure the spacer. Follow these steps:
- Position the spacer against the back of the canvas stretcher, recessing it about 1/16" from the edge of the canvas so it stays hidden behind your artwork.
- Ensure the countersunk holes on the spacer face outward (toward you), away from the artwork.
- Select screws long enough to go through the spacer and into the stretcher, but short enough to avoid piercing the front surface of your artwork.
- Scrww the spacer to strechers bars
- It is ready to attach to the frame.
For a Panel: The spacer will come pre-attached to the frame. To secure your panel to the spacer, simply center and use glue or Velcro strips to secure attachment.
I’m confused about the installation options. Can you explain them more fully?

Terminology
Plein Air Frame - A wide-faced, classical frame style used for outdoor (plein air) paintings, often featuring gold or silver leaf finishes.
Rabbet - The recessed area inside a frame where the artwork sits. For floater frames, the rabbet depth must exceed the canvas or panel thickness for a proper fit. (Artwork often sticks out the back of traditional frames.)
Ready-to-Assemble Frame- A ready-to-assemble frame is one that is shipped to you unassembled. We provide you with all the components to assemble your frame including the four sides with precision drilled dovetail in the corners, the dovetail inserts, and the formulated glue. Many customers use this option to cut down on shipping costs for very large frames.
Spacer - A spacer is a fully-assembled wooden support fitted underneath an artwork to bring up the necessary depth to ensure the artwork fits properly to the depth of the frame. If you feel your artwork may be too thin relative to the depth of the floater frame you like, enter your artwork depth to see if a spacer is necessary.
